The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have confirmed the club has a possible deal in place to build a Pan Am stadium in Burlington’s Aldershot area.

But the top Pan Am Games official says not so fast.

Club president Scott Mitchell told the Spectator the club is considering partnering with a Burlington-based consortium led by Paletta international’s Angelo Paletta on a deal that would see the group provide $30 million and a prime parcel of Aldershot property for a stadium.

The Paletta-owned property is one the Tiger-Cats have coveted for more than a year. It is east of the Aldershot GO Station and bordered on the north by Highway 403 and by King Rd.

“It’s a great site,” Mitchell said. “It is on (highways) 403 and the 407 and on a GO train station so it has a lot of possibilities.”

But Ian Troop, CEO of the organization, responsible for delivering the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games, said his organization still has obligations to deal with Hamilton, noting the city has not yet said no to a stadium.

Hamilton council has struggled to find a home for a new stadium that would be used for the 2015 Games and also the Tiger-Cats. The site is in limbo after the city’s council voted 9-6 last week against exploring the feasibility of Confederation Park for a stadium. That prompted Mitchell to set up a meeting with Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring and Councillor Rick Craven, who represents the Aldershot area.

Mitchell, who has approached Burlington council on the latest proposal, said that plan would be a “win-win” for Hamilton.

He said the franchise would still be called the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and city council could use their $45-million Future Funds — cash that would have been used as the city share of a stadium — for other uses.

“This would be a regional solution,” he added. “There are plenty of precedents in North America with stadiums not necessarily being in the municipality but still being named after the municipality that it has been connected with.”

Mitchell said a Burlington stadium would depend on the approval of Pan Am’s Hostco shifting millions of dollars in provincial and federal funding for a stadium from Hamilton to Burlington. Mitchell also hinted strongly that Burlington will have to make a financial contribution to make the Aldershot stadium a reality.

Troop said the Burlington development was new to him. He advised caution in people jumping to conclusions about it. “We’ve got ongoing obligations to Hamilton with the velodrome and Hamilton has not said no to the stadium.”

Troop said a new proposal would have many areas to satisfy over a short period — just over a month until the deadline to identify a site.

“Feb. 1 looms large,” he stressed.

If that deadline is missed, Hostco will consider smaller stadiums in Mississauga, Markham or Brampton. Last week the town of Milton offered to become the Ticats’ future home.
